Carpet FAQs

How do I measure for carpets/flooring?
Telfer Carpets Sunderland can provide a free measuring service for you, it is helpful if you know which carpet or floor covering you want prior to this so we can ensure the price is correct and stock is available. We can bring out samples to your door too.

Do you fit carpets?
Telfer Carpets Sunderland provides a fitting service with all products we sell in-store. All our fitters are experienced in their field giving you the best fitting teams around Sunderland.

What if the room is full of furniture?
To ensure your carpet is fitted correctly the room should be clear of all furniture before fitting (this also applies to laminate, vinyl’s and LVT).

Telfer Carpets understand certain items cannot come out of the room but you should advise us before the fitting.

If you want our fitters to move large items of furniture an additional charge is applicable.

Carpet & Flooring Samples
Telfer Carpets offer a sampling service free of charge to your door. If you come into the store, samples can be taken home free of charge.

Do we need to uplift our existing floor coverings before fitting?
Your existing floor covering should be uplifted including any underlay (if this is getting replaced) however if you are unable we can provide this service for an extra charge.

Rubbish and carpet cuttings
All waste will be bagged by the fitter but Telfer Carpets do not dispose of this on your behalf. Ask the fitter and he will place it in your bin for you. If you do require a disposal service an additional charge is Applicable.

Laminate FAQs

Does scotia need to be installed with the floor?
Scotia/beading is required where skirting boards remain around the room. Laminate floors require an expansion gap and the scotia/beading covers this gap.

Is laminate flooring waterproof?
Laminate floors are not waterproof but we do have some ranges which are water-resistant and have a water-resistant surface

How do I clean my laminate floor? Can you use a steam mop?
A dry mop is recommended to clean your laminate floors, if you are unsure please refer to the manufacturer’s maintenance guide of how your floor should be cleaned. A steam mop uses water/moisture and most manufacturers can not recommend this method of cleaning.

What is the difference in performance for using a good quality underlay?
A good quality underlay enhances the floor by providing warmth underfoot and providing excellent acoustics to the room it is fitted.

LVT FAQs

Does my subfloor need attention/preparation before fitting?
On most occasions your subfloor requires floor preparation e.g. plywood or screed to ensure your floor is levelled to fit vinyl floor a hard floor. There are products now available which can be installed on slightly uneven surfaces please ask your retailer for more information.

Is LVT waterproof?
The protective layer of these floors ensures resistance to stains, scratches and water.

Is underlay required?
Underlay is required on click flooring to provide a suitable base but not on dry back (stick down installations). There are several underlays to choose from depending on the product choice and the room it is installed.

Can we fit this ourselves?
We would suggest opting for a professional installation which we can provide, the products bought do have installation guides and these may vary if you do decide to do it yourself.

Vinyl FAQs

What widths do your sheet vinyls come in?

Vinyls come in 2m, 3m or 4m widths

Do you need an underlay?
Underlay is not required with vinyl however the floor should not be uneven. Some of the products do now have a felt backing to help with any imperfections to your subfloor.

Can we fit over existing floor coverings?
Vinyl should not be fitted over existing floor coverings. Vinyl is a flexible product and will mould to the existing floor and may show through.

Will the vinyl be fully stuck during installation?
Normally the vinyl is loose laid with a small amount of adhesive used on the perimeter of the area. If a full stick installation is required please request this at the point sale for further advice.
